2015 YEAR END APPEAL

Patient safety is the main concern of healthcare providers, and is at the forefront of the MHAUS organization.    Every year there are about 40 million anesthetics given.  In any one of these procedures, the patient could be at risk for malignant hyperthermia (MH) and not even be aware of the deadly consequences if their provider is not aware of the initial signs of MH.  If an MH crisis evolves either rapidly or slowly, the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States’ (MHAUS) MH Hotline is ready to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!  MHAUS supports the hotline as a free service to all who need it, and it is a cornerstone of our mission.  Perhaps you or someone you know has used the hotline and received the calm assurance through a very difficult time.  Donations to MHAUS, aside from your yearly membership/renewal fee, go directly to support this program and others like it, developed for your personal edification and to share with others.

For over 30 years MHAUS has remained focused on providing the tools for MH preparedness.  The Emergency Therapy Protocol Poster for MH is a huge benefit and ready resource clearly defining steps to take should staff at any type of facility be faced with this uncommon, but highly volatile disorder.  This poster in an algorithm style can be quickly implemented, to ensure nothing is forgotten, to bring about a positive result.  The MH Mock Drill Kit shares a concise plan for all types of facilities as they complete a “dry run” of their MH plan of action BEFORE they are faced with the chaotic milieu resulting from an unexpected MH crisis.  Preemptive planning is crucial to be sure the action plan is fresh in their minds.  A “planned” MH Mock Drill Call to the MH Hotline further enhances the “reality”.

To take this idea one step further, we recently developed what we call the MH Prep Check.  This program brings an MH expert to a facility to oversee staff performing an MH Mock Drill plan of action and subsequently offers feedback on quality improvements to consider.  A short primer on MH is provided and their questions are answered on the spot.  This direct access to MH experts who regularly answer MH Hotline calls is a premium offered only through MHAUS, and has received high praises.  Your donation will help us continue this program.

MHAUS is a patient advocacy organization.  We try to listen to patients, healthcare providers and anyone with an interest in MH to determine what they need for their particular situation; then develop the products or programs to fit their need.  This is not always easy or quickly implemented and may take a year or so to develop; we must assure it is appropriate, correct, and the best we can develop.  This requires multiple levels of constructive criticism from our experts and others.  The resulting feedback from customers continues to be positive and thankful.

The NAMH Registry of MHAUS staff, MH experts, and other researchers continue to review mounting evidence and data appearing to suggest there might be a relationship between MH and heat stroke.  We have begun to speak with other groups who are focused on the growing number of deaths from heat stroke on the sports field.  A dialogue with athletic trainers and physicians is beginning in order to find a way to identify those who might be at greater risk for exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis, heat stroke and MH for further evaluation.  At this point, we are simply raising awareness about the possible relationship, but further information is needed to clearly define the risks of exercise in hot environments for an MH-susceptible.

Genetics may play an important role in future developments.  We will continue to monitor publications and research in this arena as well.  Our website’s (www.mhaus.org) Facebook and Twitter feeds will share results as they are discovered.

Generous support from individuals, corporations and medical societies has enabled us to continue to focus on driving toward 0 deaths from MH.  To achieve this goal, we need your help!  Every dollar counts and you can make a difference by replying with any donation you can!

Please consider making a donation today (separate from the minimal membership/renewal fees which provide membership benefits, like 30% off most products) to sustain MHAUS’ efforts.  Below you will find several donation options - including automatic deductions. The method that best suits your personal preference is totally up to you.  Feel free to call us at 607-674-7901 for clarification, if needed.

MHAUS thanks you and we wish you a healthy and happy 2016!
